By Claudia Vandermilt

Are you an experienced project manager who’s ready to take your career to the next level? Distinguish yourself by earning the prestigious Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification, awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI®). The PMP® is the most recognized and respected credential in the profession – and it’s in demand by employers across the globe.

PMI® certification is also offered for project managers who are newer to the profession, as well as those who wish to change careers and pursue the field of project management. The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) demonstrates a proven knowledge of the fundamentals, process and terminology of project management. This valuable certification shows your commitment to professional education and project management – and helps you stand out among your peers.

Preparing for certification in project management through online PMP® or CAPM® prep courses enhances your skills and increases your knowledge of key concepts, such as:

  • The role of strategic planning in project management.
  • Effective project planning and tracking.
  • Selection, management and evaluation of project teams within an organization.
  • Risk management and minimization techniques.
  • Directing and managing project execution.

Who Should Pursue PMP® Certification?

PMP certification demonstrates a level of competency in project management that employers trust and rely upon – so it’s universally accepted and respected. PMI® certification can help you successfully compete for desirable project management positions.

Professionals with experience in project management can prepare for the PMP® certification exam online through online universities. Incorporating this high-quality, professional education into your busy schedule is easier than ever, with 24/7 access and flexible scheduling that fits your lifestyle.
PMP® Requirements

PMI® has established minimum requirements for applying for PMP® certification. At the time of application, a candidate must have*:

  • A four-year degree (bachelor’s or global equivalent)
  • A minimum of three years of project management experience.
  • At least 4,500 hours leading and directing projects.
  • A minimum of 35 hours of project management education.

Or:

  • A secondary diploma (high school or global equivalent).
  • A minimum of five years of project management experience.
  • At least 7,500 hours leading and directing projects.
  • A minimum of 35 hours of project management education.

Candidates who do not meet the above qualifications may apply for CAPM® certification.

Maintaining PMP® Certification

PMP® certification holders must earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) per three-year cycle in order to maintain their credential. Participating in professional development activities, such as continuing education and giving back to the profession through volunteer service, typically counts towards the required PDUs.

Are You a Good Fit for CAPM® Certification?

If you’re just establishing yourself in project management, you’ll soon learn that expanding your skills and building your knowledge throughout your career will be essential to your success. Online project management courses will give you skills you can use immediately to improve your job performance, while preparing you for the CAPM® exam.

Applying for the CAPM® requires a high school diploma or global equivalent, and at least 1,500 hours of project management experience or 23 hours of project management education.

Earning the CAPM® certification demonstrates a real commitment to project management that can earn the respect of current and potential employers. Plus, you’ll have the knowledge and skills to lead larger projects, as well as the confidence to compete for more challenging project management positions.

Maintaining CAPM® Certification

CAPM certification holders must re-take the exam at the end of their five-year certification period. They are not required to earn professional development units (PDUs).
