Project Management for Consultants – Best Practices
By Michael Wood

Below is a list of best practices that should (ideally) be adopted by Project Managers working as consultants:

  • Show up early – leave late
  • Be available to listen and empathize
  • Participate in meetings
  • Be on the lookout for more opportunities
  • Dress just a bit nicer than the staff
  • Always be aware of
    • who your are around
    • how you are being perceived
    • what is coming out of your mouth
  • Understand the players (formal and informal roles & relationships) – be a little paranoid
  • Do more than is expected – be outstanding
  • Think phases – think penetration
  • Scope change can be a great thing – provides opportunities for more work and fees
